Eleven injured in stabbing at Michigan Walmart, authorities say

At least 11 people were injured in a stabbing at a Walmart in Michigan, according to authorities.

The incident occurred in Traverse City, where a 42-year-old suspect has been taken into custody.

Munson Medical Center, a nearby hospital, confirmed it is treating all 11 victims. "As a result, our Emergency Department is currently experiencing a higher-than-usual volume of patients," the hospital said in a social media post.

Videos shared online show numerous police and ambulance vehicles gathered in the Walmart parking lot.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office confirmed it is investigating "a multiple stabbing incident at the Walmart in Traverse City."

Sheriff Michael Shea told reporters that the suspect, a Michigan resident, used a "folding knife-style weapon" in what appears to have been a "random act."

He noted that several bystanders inside the store helped detain the suspect and provided aid to the victims.

"This was a joint effort from start to finish—and that includes the citizens who stepped in as well," Shea said.

As of Saturday night, five victims remained in serious condition, while six were reported to be in critical condition.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino stated that federal agents were on the ground to assist local authorities as needed.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she was in contact with law enforcement regarding the "horrible news."

“Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence,” she said.

Traverse City is located approximately 255 miles (410 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.
