Iran and Israel trade strikes as conflict rages

Iran and Israel trade strikes as conflict rages

What's happening now

• Rising Death Toll: The number of casualties from overnight Iranian strikes on Israel has climbed to 10, adding to the three previously reported deaths in Israel. Meanwhile, at least 78 people have been killed in Iran amid the ongoing escalation, according to official sources in both countries.

• Prolonged Conflict Ahead: Israel’s military campaign against Iran is expected to continue for “weeks, not days,” with tacit backing from the United States, according to U.S. and Israeli officials. In a televised address on Saturday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Israel would target “every site and every objective of the Ayatollah’s regime.” In response, Iran warned it would escalate its retaliation if Israeli strikes persist.

• Strikes in Tehran: The Israeli Air Force launched a “broad series of intelligence-led strikes” across Tehran, including a hit on the headquarters of Iran’s Ministry of Defense, according to Israeli military statements. Iran’s Tasnim News Agency confirmed minor damage to one of the ministry’s administrative buildings.

• Attacks on Energy Infrastructure: Iran reported that Israeli airstrikes targeted key energy sites, including the South Pars gas field—the largest in the world—and the Shahran oil depot. Video footage from Tehran shows flames and thick smoke rising from the affected areas.

• Nuclear Talks Canceled: Planned nuclear negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, scheduled for this weekend in Oman, have been called off, according to Oman’s foreign minister. Iran’s top negotiator, Abbas Araghchi, had earlier declared that holding talks was “unjustifiable” amid ongoing Israeli attacks.

Flights and airspace still impacted in Israel and Iran, as Jordan reopens skies

Airspace Closures Continue Amid Escalating Conflict

Israel’s airspace remains closed as of Sunday, with Ben Gurion International Airport—its primary international hub—shut to all incoming and outgoing flights, according to a spokesperson for the Israel Airports Authority. The closure has been in effect since Israel began its initial strikes on Iran on Friday.

Iran also shut down its airspace on Friday, with the restriction set to remain in place until 3 p.m. local time on Sunday, the country's Civil Aviation Organization announced. Authorities advised passengers to avoid traveling to airports during this period.

Meanwhile, Jordan—which lies between Israel and Iran—temporarily closed its airspace as a precaution on Friday. It reopened early Sunday after a “reassessment of security and airspace risks,” according to the Jordanian Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission.

Photos and names released of four killed in northern Israel by Iranian strikes

Victims Identified in Northern Israel Strike as Shelter Shortage Sparks Outcry

The names and photos of four individuals killed in an Iranian strike on northern Israel overnight have been released, as residents voice growing fears over inadequate protection in Palestinian-Israeli towns.

The four victims were killed in Tamra, a predominantly Palestinian-Israeli town, after a residential building was hit, according to Israeli emergency services. Their deaths bring the total Israeli casualties from overnight strikes to 10, including six others killed in separate attacks in central Israel.

“The villages and cities in Palestinian areas inside Israel pay the price,” a Tamra resident told CNN. “These places have no shelters … Rockets are intercepted right above our heads.”

The Association for Civil Rights in Israel has warned that many Palestinian-Israeli communities in the north lack basic protective infrastructure, including public shelters and fortified spaces in schools.

Death Toll in Israel Rises to 10 Following Iranian Strikes

The death toll in Israel from overnight Iranian missile strikes has climbed to 10, as emergency crews continue search and rescue operations at multiple impact sites.

Six people were killed in Bat Yam, a city on Israel’s central coast, after a residential building sustained a direct hit, according to the Israeli search and rescue organization ZAKA.

In the northern Palestinian-Israeli town of Tamra, another four fatalities were reported after several buildings were struck.

Israeli strikes hit missile launch facilities in Iran, says IDF

Israel Strikes Missile Launchers and Military Sites Deep Inside Iran

Israeli airstrikes targeted surface-to-surface missile launchers and other military infrastructure in Iran overnight, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement released Sunday morning.

"Overnight, missile launchers were identified and struck in Iran," the IDF said. "In the past hour, the Israeli Air Force carried out an additional wave of strikes on missile storage and infrastructure sites in western Iran."

The Israeli Air Force also released video footage showing large explosions and thick plumes of smoke, claiming it depicts the strikes on missile launcher sites.

Earlier attacks also targeted the headquarters of Iran’s Ministry of Defense in Tehran, along with an oil depot and a fuel tank near the capital.

Iran has not yet provided any official information on casualties resulting from the strikes.

Strategic Impact

The Israeli Air Force previously confirmed it had struck key defense installations in the Tehran area overnight into Saturday. Major General Tomer Bar, commander of the Israeli Air Force, emphasized the operation’s significance.

“We damaged — and will continue to damage — strategic sites and enemy sources of knowledge,” Bar said. “For the first time since the beginning of the war, the IAF struck defense arrays more than 1,500 kilometers [932 miles] from Israeli territory.”

US had "nothing to do with the attack on Iran," Trump says

Trump Distances U.S. from Iran Strikes, Warns Tehran Against Escalation

Former President Donald Trump asserted Sunday that the United States “had nothing to do with the attack on Iran tonight,” in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. He also issued a stark warning to Tehran not to draw the U.S. into the conflict.

“If we are attacked in any way, shape, or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before,” Trump wrote.

Despite the warning, Trump suggested diplomacy was still possible: “We can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict.”

Earlier this spring, Trump reportedly gave Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei a 60-day window to negotiate a new nuclear agreement, warning of consequences if no progress was made. During that time, he also urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to delay military action against Iran to allow room for talks.

Speaking to CNN after Israel launched its strikes on Iran on Friday, Trump noted the timing: “I don’t know if you know, but I gave them a 60-day warning — and today is day 61.”

What we know about overnight strikes between Israel and Iran

Crisis Escalates as Israel and Iran Trade Overnight Strikes

It’s early Sunday morning in the Middle East, where emergency operations continue following a night of intense cross-border attacks between Israel and Iran.

Iran’s Strikes on Israel:

Iran launched a wave of drone and missile strikes overnight, killing at least eight people in Israel. Victims ranged in age from 10 to 80. In Bat Yam, a city along Israel’s central coast, a direct hit on a residential building killed four people and injured many others. Another four were killed in the northern Palestinian-Israeli town of Tamra after a building was struck. Over 140 people have been reported injured across central Israel.

Israel’s Strikes on Iran:

In response, Israel carried out multiple strikes across Iran, including on the headquarters of the Iranian Ministry of Defense in Tehran. Additional targets included sites linked to Iran’s nuclear program, as well as an oil depot and a fuel tank near the capital, which caused a large fire. While Iran has not confirmed casualties from these latest strikes, state media reported the situation was “under control.” Authorities had earlier reported at least 78 deaths from previous Israeli attacks.

Widening Conflict:

Israel’s military campaign is expected to continue “for weeks, not days,” with tacit backing from the United States, according to officials from both countries. A White House official confirmed the Biden administration is aware of Israel’s ongoing plans and has offered implicit support. An Israeli official told CNN that former President Donald Trump has also not opposed the extended timeline during private discussions.

Netanyahu’s Warning:

In a televised address Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to press forward until Iran’s nuclear capabilities are dismantled. “We will continue for as many days as it takes,” he said, claiming Israel had already destroyed key Iranian missile launch sites and stockpiles.

Iran’s Position:

Iran, which maintains that its nuclear program is peaceful, said it had “no choice but to respond.” The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that it would intensify attacks if Israel’s military operations persist.

Child Among Four Killed in Iranian Missile Strike on Central Israel

A 10-year-old boy was among four people killed when an Iranian missile struck a residential building in the central Israeli city of Bat Yam, according to emergency services. Several individuals remain unaccounted for as rescue operations continue.

Israel’s national emergency service, Magen David Adom (MDA), confirmed the deaths of the boy, a 60-year-old woman, an 80-year-old woman, and a girl whose age has not been disclosed.

The strike, which hit around 2:30 a.m., triggered a large-scale emergency response. Video footage from the scene shows the front of the building torn away, with debris piled high and search teams using dogs to comb through the rubble. Nearby structures were also damaged, with windows shattered and frames ripped from the walls.

“We don’t yet know how many people are missing,” Bat Yam Mayor Tzvika Brot told Reuters. “But many residents haven’t been in contact with their loved ones, so our focus now is on finding them.”

Authorities are establishing family support centers and providing aid to residents displaced by the strikes, while urging the public to avoid the affected areas.

Lt. Dean Elsdunne, international spokesperson for Israel Police, reported receiving “numerous impact site” notifications following a “large barrage of rockets” launched from Iran.

“We have several casualties requiring medical evacuation, including fatalities,” Elsdunne said from Bat Yam in a Reuters video. He added that police are coordinating with the military and other agencies to locate missing residents and secure the scene.

Approximately 140 people have been injured across two locations in central Israel.

In a separate round of strikes, four more people were killed in northern Israel, bringing the total death toll from overnight attacks into Sunday to eight.
